Welcome to the Multigenerational Workplace (And How To Adapt Your Skills)

Updated: Jan 11

In recent years, the work landscape has undergone a profound transformation. While many companies have announced a 'Back to Office' movement, a significant number of individuals continue to split their work between home and the office.

As businesses evolve, it's crucial to acknowledge that most companies nowadays can be described as a multigenerational workplace. Creating an inclusive work environment where every team member can make meaningful contributions, feel valued, and respected is not just good practice - it's an essential one. And remember, you should expect the same for yourself!

What are Soft vs. Hard Skills - and why do I need both?

Soft skills are a combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, character or personality traits, attitudes, social intelligence, and emotional intelligence quotients that enable employees to navigate their environment, work well with others, perform well and achieve their goals. In the workplace, soft skills are considered to be a complement to hard skills, which refer to a person’s knowledge and occupational skills.

KEY SOFT SKILLS IN THE MULTIGENERATIONAL WORKPLACE:

  • Attitude

  • Communication (both listening and speaking skills)

  • Work ethic

  • Teamwork & Communication: Successful collaboration is strongly related to good communication skills. Communication skills include actively listening to colleagues and willing engagement in conflict resolution to mitigate the effects of miscommunications as well as keeping projects and organisational initiatives on track.

  • Compassion in Leadership: Compassion is a pre-requisite for effective communication and other soft skills that enhance interpersonal relationships in the workplace, which are essential to maintaining workplace cohesion.

  • Time management

  • Decision making

  • Conflict resolution

  • Creative & Critical Thinking: Essential for new ideas, services and products. As artificial intelligence and automation in business evolve, creative and critical thinking skills will be increasingly needed to complement the capabilities of machines.

  • Networking

  • Empathy

  • Problem-solving
